John,
Apparently I'm "not allowed" by my company to make product endorsements, so
please leave my name off this post.
I spent a long time looking at several such products, from RCS and SCCS,
through CVS and on to the bigger commercially-supported tools.
I chose ClearCase from Rational (formerly PureAtria, formerly Atria).
It is an extremely powerful tool, and not only does revision control, but
also build/release management and workspace management. I use it for
HDL-based chip design, and it has completely transformed our management of
that sort of work.
It's downside is that it does require a degree of admin. If you have
sysadmin or CAE resource already, then it won't add a great deal to that.
But if you are in a, "Joe-the-layout-guy-does-the-sysadmin" situation,
then Joe's going to have to do a bit less layout.
However, even given that, I would strongly recommend this tool. Put it this
way, if a group *isn't* using a tool like this, then they probably don't
have a sufficiently robust configuration management strategy. ClearCase
won't provide that strategy, but it will allow you to implement it, in a
way that things like RCS and CVS simply can't approach.
Oh, it does have a GUI, but that's for wimps :-)
