My opinion is that there is no solution. Even the boundaries of the 45 path
are not on grid. That has to be, simple mathematics. The only thing you
can do is: draw polygons.

Long ago we wrote our own tool (in Cadence Skill code) including that
capability. I'd expect some commercial tools may do it also (browse
Connections Partners on the Cadence site)? As a fun basic starting point,
develop a pcell to emulate the path (points, width, layer, grid, etc.) but
keep it on grid. (One of the 4.4.x releases has (will have?)
mouse-draggable "handles" on pcells? Anyone play with that yet?)

There is a "fix" that is commercially available. You can find this at
http://www.stxcadware.com/ (a connections partner). They have written, in
SKILL, a series of programs one of which is called "polypath". Using that
program, you enter a path and when you have completed your entry the path is
converted into a polygon automatically, design rule correct and with the 45
degree angles made properly. The width of the 45 degree segment will be
slightly wider depending upon working grid and of course the square root of
2 issue.

This is not an endorsement of Stx Cadware, I am simply, as a fellow user,
offering a suggestion.
