John,
We did an Linux/Solaris evaluation some time ago. For the Linux side, it
turned out that the topics which the poster requests have not made a big
difference. But we found already during evaluation of the Linux boxes some
problems. And there it turned out that there are tremendous differences in
support. One of our home made tools was not running. We simply handed the
tool and a (complex) test case over to the hardware resellers support.
The results was at the end:
- VA Linux: difficult to contact support, but when this problem is solved,
the support people knew immediately what was going on and worked out a
kernel patch which solved all our problems
- "Established" IT Companies: very easy to get contact to support, but they
were after weeks still far away from identifying the problem.
To answer the questions of the original poster:
We are running VA 2200 boxes. So far one power supply died, replaced
immediately. There was one software support call. A perfect solution was
worked out by experts, but reponse time was a few days.
