Dear Wayne,

Do you have any sense for how long it will likely take the "new" SNPS to
put a front-to-back flow into your team's hands? Will they be able to come
to market with a product before Cadence?

Hi Greg,

It's still too early to even guess what'll come out of the acquisition.
Synopsys and Avanti users are all hoping for the best. However, as a
company looking for DSM libraries, Avanti is getting hurt because of
Synopsys' previous library business sell-off.

The two companies should be able to put together a very tight RTL-to-GDS
flow, but there'll be some bumps along the way to see who stays, and where
the new lines are drawn. I hear insiders at Cadence are really shaking
in their boots!

Dear Bob,

This is in response to a query by Wayne Miller in ESNUG 386 #9.

I'm wondering what Wayne's question implies about the ability of Synopsys to
create an integrated front-to-backend flow with its acquisition of Avanti?
Did you work with either of the vendors prior to the deal's announcement?
How have those interactions changed, if at all, after the announcement?

I know this email comes out of the blue... I'm just interested in learning
about the space, was browsing the ESNUG email, and your post caught my eye.

Hi Greg,

I don't think Wayne's question was so much about tools interoperability as
it was about a specific functionality issue and how different tools handle
the situation. I personally haven't used Avanti tools, so I don't know how
they handle multiple operating conditions.

The Avanti acquisition announcement has not really effected my interactions
with Synopsys, but it certainly has me thinking. Obviously they are heading
for a fully integrated front to back solution, and it will take time to find
the best of both tool suites and integrate them into something better. One
thing that could be effected is the OpenAccess situation. (See EE Times
http://www.eedesign.com/story/OEG20020204S0022 for more.)

The OpenAccess Coalition is supporting Cadence's Genesis database, but there
are those who question the amount of control Cadence has over the standard.
I don't believe that Avanti would have ever offered their Milkyway database
for OpenAccess, but I believe Synopsys would have much to gain by doing so.

Another issue is that the Genesis database is only used in Integration
Ensemble, a product that wont be shipping in volume until 2003. The
Milkyway database however, is field proven with a significant customer base.

After seeing a recent demo of Silicon Perspective, I would question whether
or not Cadence really needs IE. That's a bold statement, so let me calm
that down a little. I'm not fully familiar with all the capabilities
planned for Integration Ensemble, but Silicon Perspective's First Encounter,
generally acknowledged to be everything Synopsys' Chip Architect wanted to
be and maybe even more, gives Cadence a working hierarchical flow today when
combined with pieces of Silicon Ensemble. This, IMHO, was a brilliant
acquisition by Cadence. Otherwise, if Silicon Perspective had fully
partnered with Plato (NanoRoute), they may have considerably altered the
EDA landscape.

Dan,

Have you experienced any change in the operations/interactions with either
of Syposys or Avanti post their merger announcement?

Greg,

I don't deal with Avanti at all. Synopsys has not changed.
