Subject: How do the three MENT/EVE lawsuits impact Veloce/ZeBu ownership?
Hi, John,
I wanted to tell you thanks for running such a useful user web site over
the years. Whenever I want to know what's really going on in EDA, instead
of the BS official mktg blogs, I always go to DeepChip first.
My boss wants me to get the inside scoop on EVE Zebu and Mentor Veloce.
I googled "zebu site:deepchip.com" and the most recent user review I
could find for it was:
(2009) Fujitsu engineer's evaluation of the EVE ZeBu
http://www.deepchip.com/items/0483-10.html
I googled "veloce site:deepchip.com" and the most recent user review I
could find for it was:
(2009) Veloce cranks video 3X faster than on VStation
http://www.deepchip.com/items/0482-07.html
I also saw:
Mentor Veloce marketing busted for out-of-date benchmark data
http://www.deepchip.com/wiretap/100629.html
and from your 2011 DAC "Cheesy Must See List" you commented:
Mentor Veloce used to compete here, too, but I haven't heard from them
this year... OMG! Has Carl Icahn already cut the Veloce group!??
- from http://www.deepchip.com/gadfly/gad060211.html
For my research, I have a few questions to ask you and your readers, John.
- Do you know of any direct users of either Veloce or Zebu who could
review the 2012 tools like you had on DeepChip before? 2009 is
out of date. I have no use for corporate blogs. I want to only
hear directly from the Zebu/Veloce users themselves like before.
- For a while it appeared that EVE was prepping itself to be acquired
by Synopsys. Do you think the renewed 2010 MENT/EVE lawsuits in the
U.S. and in Japan have stopped this from happening?
- Is it true that Carl Icahn wants to cut back or possibly spin out
the MENT Veloce group? (He made MENT spin out Catapult C.)
- What do you think the likely outcome will be of these renewed suits?
Should we consider not buying a ZeBu box for fear of being drawn into
the suits? (i.e. Is there any customer liability for using a product
that is later found to be violating another company's patent?)
- Conversely, is it possible that a judge could assign the contested
patents to EVE, thus making it dangerous to own Veloce boxes?
Essentially my boss wants to know how good or bad these new Veloce and ZeBu
boxes are plus assess the probabilities that either box may later be left
unsupported. $1+ million is a LOT to risk on one tool.
Please keep my name and company anonymous.
