( ESNUG 535 Item 9 ) -------------------------------------------- [01/30/14]
Subject: 1/3rd of users concerned about CDNS vs. BDA lawsuit settlement
MOST ARE HAPPY: The concerns users have about the CDNS vs. BDA settlement
broke out to 3 different basic complaints:
- "Oh, no! This means Synopsys or Mentor can now buy BDA!"
- "Oh, no! The undisclosed fine will financially cripple BDA!"
- "Oh, no! BDA tools agreed to be trapped behind slow OASIS!"
But easily the majority of users where very happy that this settlement was
reached -- most because they didn't want to get sued by CDNS as one of the
"25 DOES" accomplices repeatedly mentioned in the CDNS court filings.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I fear this lawsuit being settled opens the door to Aart and
Wally going into a bidding war to buy BDA.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Not good. The CDNS lawsuit was insurance that SNPS and MENT
couldn't acquire BDA.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
This lawsuit was supposed to go on for years! ?#*% !!!
BDA gives us great SPICE along with great support.
That all goes away when Aart buys them.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Lawsuits are expensive. I hope the attorneys' fees incurred
along the way doesn't drive BDA into Aart's arms.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
The court records show the case was settled back on October 15
last year. Why was it announced only in January this year?
To me, that's a little odd. Was Cadence trying to buy BDA
during that time? Or something else?
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I've heard the settlement was for $1 million USD to be paid
over 4 years. Not exactly lethal, yet a $250,000 per year
drain can sure give AFS support the flu.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
It was for a grand total $100,000. Cut one Santa Clara, or
10 Bangalore engineers, and the fine is paid.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Ihe OASIS interface sucks! BDA is %#$@-ed if they agreed to
lock themselves in it. Might as well sell the company now
to Synopsys or Mentor who can hire better lawyers to fix this.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
What's to stop Cadence from throttling the OASIS interface
when ADE senses a BDA tool is talking to it?
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Not good. AFS in ADE by way of OASIS is crap slow.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Ravi's lawyers fell for the stupidest trick in the book if
they agreed to stop using SKILL and instead go through OASIS.
Any tool with that slow of an I/O will be useless for us.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Normally I'm indifferent when one EDA company sues another.
When Cadence added 25 DOES, I was cheering for Ravi.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Awesome
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
That's good news. No lawsuit for us.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Good.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Honest to God -- our local Cadence sales office was the first
to give us your CDNS/BDA link, John. They were ecstatic.
It was our company policy that absolutely no Cadence sales
people could visit us until this case was over.
Now they're taking us to lunch so we can catch up. Lucky us.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Good news. Thanks.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
It's a happy day to learn that we're not being pulled into
two SW suppliers' asinine lawsuit.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Excellent!
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
My mgnt is angry to have been threatened in this. Hopefully
this news will cool them down a bit.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Good news. Whatever genius at CDNS who said "and why don't
we threaten to sue BDA's customers, too!" has no idea how
such thinking impacts long term CDNS customer relations.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Our legal dept will be quite pleased to hear this.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
LIKE
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We can't get sued? Thank God. This was a stupid case to begin
with.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I hate everything lawyers do.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
It's good to see Lip-bu Tan lose this. As a CEO new to EDA he
needs to learn that suing smaller rivals and his customers is
not an honourable way to run a business.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Good
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
It's not every day when a small $30 million company wins against
a $1 billion company in court. Hurrahs to Ravi and his team.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Having a healthy BDA around keeps Tom's ADE boys honest. Without
competition the whole SPICE ecosystem goes into decline.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Now that this cluster #*%< is over, good. I'll tell legal this
matter is resolved.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Thanks for including the case number in your coverage of this.
Makes it easy for our lawyer to look it up.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Happy. No court for us.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I, for one, welcome our AFS overlords!
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
This affair was moronic from the start. It serves Tom Beckley
right that he got his @$$ handed back to him on a platter.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Good.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
All your ADE base are belong to us.
