Subject: What design and verification engineers want on global projects
From: [ Dean Drako of IC Manage ]

Hi, John,

According to this year's 2014 survey we've found that 82 percent of chip
design companies do their designing multi-site. It's not uncommon to see
projects "follow the sun" with the work being passed off from the U.S.,
then to Japan/Korea, then to Europe, then back to the U.S. In a similar
deal, some companies have two country design passing between the U.S. and
India; or the U.S. and Europe.

Or some companies have all the design being done in the U.S. with all of
the verification being done overnight in India or Europe.

Regardless, these companies are demanding greater design and IP management
functionality. Here's how they ranked their multi-site DM requirements.

As with last year's 2013 discussion being "design and verification reuse",
this year's 2014 discussion is on "equally efficient global and local data."

LEFT: The engineer who has only limited multi-site capabilities

RIGHT: The engineer who has full multi-site info and capabilities

These 6 elements are in the order ranked by the design and verification
engineers (and their managers!) in this year's survey.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

#1 - GLOBAL VISIBILITY

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

#2 - ALL IP IS VISIBLE

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

#3 - REMOTE SITE DM PERFORMANCE

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

#4 - INTELLIGENT BUG DEPENDENCY MANAGEMENT

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

#5 - HANDOFFS WITH AUDIT TRAILS TO ALL DESIGNERS EVERYWHERE

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

#6 - R&D CONTINUITY DESPITE REMOTE NETWORK DISRUPTIONS

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Last year the design community said they got a 30% schedule improvement
with 30% less engineering man-hours just by doing intelligent IP reuse.

Imagine the impact of being able to truly leverage global talent 24/7
once all the global data management and network kinks are worked out.
