Subject: SCOOP -- Cadence IP SVP/GM resigns after 8 months on the job

"WTF!? AGAIN?!?": Last week on Friday the 13th, not only did Atoptech file
for bankruptcy, I also got a tip that Pieter Vorenkamp, the new SVP/GM of
the Cadence IP group had resigned after only being on the job for 8 months.

To be brutally honest, I thought this was just a Friday the 13th practical
joke being played on me. ("Oh, man... That can't be true... Pieter had
replaced Martin Lund who left 18 months ago. I'm being pranked here...")

Cadence IP had flopped twice in both my 2014 and 2015 IP user surveys:

ARM, Synopsys DesignWare, Mentor VIP, plus Cadence IP went missing?

I thought: "Yea, Pieter resigning after 8 months is too weird. It's got to
be Aart's Designware guys trying to prank me... They'd have a blast with
that news using it as proof of how Cadence IP was failing, etc. ...")

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Then 6 days pass, and holy crap! -- a bunch of other spies report the exact
same news -- Pieter Vorenkamp had resigned!!!

So I dug into the story. Turns out Lip-bu Tan had sent out a Cadence-wide
email explaining why Pieter suddenly left. I dug some more.

And I felt like shit.
Back in 2010 Pieter's 13 year old son, Tim Vorenkamp, was diagnosed with a
very rare cancer, Stage 3 Synovial Sarcoma, which only 3 out of 1,000,000
people ever get. And for the next 5 years's Tim's life was: "hundreds of
doctor visits, countless blood work, many different kinds of chemotherapy,
radiation, over 30 hospital stays, and nearly 10 surgeries..."

Timing is everything.

Last week was when Tim's father, our Pieter Vorenkamp, had resigned as the
SVP/GM of Cadence IP -- because it was almost to the exact day the one year
anniversary of his then 18 year old son Tim's death.

Pieter's resignation was because he had to spend time with his family, and
Lip-bu Tan's company-wide letter was an appeal to Cadence employees to visit

                 http://www.LiveForOthersFoundation.com

to help find a cure for this extremely rare cancer that killed Pieter's son.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Yesterday this was all confirmed when (without any notice nor press release)
the Cadence web site suddenly had Pieter mysterious gone from the Cadence
eStaff listing -- and in his place as SVP/GM of CNDS IP is Babu Mandava.

My dirt on Babu is he's an old buddy of Lip-bu Tan. Something like 20 years
they've known each other. Lip-bu was picking someone he knows.

Babu's background is as CEO and founder of Beceem Communications in 2003.
It took in $98 M in VC funding, and sold to Broadcom in 2010 for $316 M.
He stayed at BRCM as a VP of Engineering leading 800 engineers "designing
Broadcom's first LTE multi-mode baseband chipset."

Beyond that Babu worked at other chip companies leading chip design teams
of anywhere from 30 to 250 engineers. Babu is NOT an EDA nor IP guy, he's
purely a chip design guy.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

So I have to say "sorry" to Aart's Designware guys. My further snooping
reveals that Babu is inherenting a Cadence IP group of ~800 engineers which
is still selling lots of VIP and some bits of hard IP -- and it still
accounts for $200 million (12%) of all CDNS revenues.
In my book, *anyone* dealing with a close family death gets a free pass.

Pieter leaving was 100% personal; and NOT saying anything +/- about CDNS IP.
