Subject: Joe Sawicki smirks at Cadence Pegasus' 3 big critical DRC failings
DAC'18 Troublemakers Panel in San Francisco
Cooley: Joe. You know a little something about Calibre. Last year,
Anirudh talked about Pegasus taking on Mentor Calibre.
Sawicki: You're not going to make me answer that one, are you? I went
off two Christmas card lists because of that comment last year.
Cooley: Now, the survey results I got for Best of 2017, was that Calibre
is still king. The users were saying that. (See DAC'17 #3)
But there was a caveat. They were curious about certification
of CDNS Pegasus; what happens when Pegasus does get certified?
Sawicki: Probably the same type of thing that happens when the other tools
are certified. I mean, I don't see the Pegasus cascade.
Cooley: It was the DRC runset deck problem, it was not..
Sawicki: Sure, well... this goes back to like the RedHawk/Voltus thing
you were asking about (DAC'17 #9) as well.
I mean if you're going after a tool in the market, there are
stages you need to go through.
[ EDITOR'S NOTE: Last year Joe Sawicki pointed out how CDNS
Pegasus had zero foundry certified DRC runsets, zero user
benchmarks, and zero customer presence -- and to quote Joe
directly "Pegasus is a mythical beast. I'm having trouble
finding it in the market." (See ESNUG 576 #1) - John ]
You need to make sure that you've got a technology, that when you
eventually get to a customer, that they're going to care about
performance. There are aspects of dealing with legacy issues.
There are aspects with qualifying the tool. There's aspects of
putting quality in place.
I mean, these things aren't where you go flip a switch. I cannot
imagine a world where Cadence doesn't find a way to go get
Pegasus qualified at some point, it's going to happen.
And at that point, we may finally see our first benchmark against
them and that would be a fine thing. Because the way we all get
better in this world is just enough competition to make life
interesting. [audience laughs]
Cooley: Yeah, you'll keep talking about it being mythical...
Sawicki: Hey, just remember he said it this time. (points to Cooley)
Cooley: So, you're saying Pegasus is mythical? You're still not
seeing Pegasus anywhere?
Sawicki: I still have a bounty out for the first Calibre vs. Pegasus
user benchmark.
Cooley: Okay. Anirudh, why does TSMC not certify your decks for Pegasus?
It's been like what, 18 months now, what 24 months?
Anirudh: I think we announced Pegasus last year.
Cooley: Okay. 12 months.
Anirudh: So, you know you were talking about Voltus, right, before.
I have to remind you Voltus was introduced at the end of 2013;
that's at least 4 and a half years ago. So, these things,
especially sign off -- you know this is a journey right? You
have to have the tool. You work with customers. You work with
foundries.
We're still in the early innings of Pegasus. And, you know I am
confident in the technology. I'm confident in the integration,
and you know let's see how it plays out. Ask me 4 1/2 years
from now -- or 3 1/2 years from now -- how Pegasus is doing.
So, this is something that is an important tool in the market.
It's an important tool for Cadence to have a full flow, and
something we are investing in.
