( DAC'14 Item 10 ) ---------------------------------------------- [12/18/14]
Subject: Cadence Voltus is only nibbling on Apache Redhawk for IR-drop
APACHE IS STILL KING: A little over 13 months ago, DeepChip scooped that
Cadence was taking on the Apache Redhawk IP-drop near monopoly with Voltus
in ESNUG 534 #1. Then 2 weeks before DAC'14, DeepChip got:
Customer benchmark of Ansys/Apache RedHawk vs. Cadence Voltus
And looking at these post-DAC'14 user comments, it appears that the good
folks at Anysys/Apache doing Redhawk R&D and support are NOT going to be
losing their jobs any time too soon.
SURVEY QUESTION #1:
"What were the 3 or 4 most INTERESTING specific EDA tools
you saw at DAC this year? WHY did they interest you?"
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
From my DAC discussions, my interest was mainly in Cadence Voltus.
The biggest factors for Voltus were 1) performance, 2) its peak
memory usage allowed for higher capacity versus Apache.
I have not had any hands on experience to confirm this yet.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Voltus has strong power analysis capabilities for the digital
portion of a mixed-signal SoC.
However, if people need a clean full-chip power analysis flow
for mixed-signal designs, Apache is still far ahead of everyone.

Cadence Voltus:
While it sounds interesting, the Tempus-Voltus integration (when it
happens) would be most beneficial for IR-drop effect-based STA

I attended Cadence Tempus and Voltus Scalable Timing/Power Signoff
session. Voltus power signoff was presented well.

Apache RedHawk-CPA, since this is their next attempt to more closely
integrate IC and package co-design and co-analysis.
Cadence Voltus-Fi: overcoming capacitity limitations of Redhawk
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
So far we've seen no reason to drop Redhawk.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We just renewed with Apache. Voltus will have to wait 3 years.

Ansys Redhawk

Invarian
We're looking for an Apache replacement. Redhawk is too expensive.
But we do not have the bandwidth for a Invarian eval. This will
drag until next year DAC.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Invarian. New blood is always welcome.
